Why Honey Is Unsafe for Babies Under 1 Year

Honey can contain spores of a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum. In older children and adults, the gut deals with these spores. In babies under 12 months, the gut is not yet mature, and the spores can grow and produce a toxin that causes infant botulism, a rare but serious illness.

Signs can include constipation, weak sucking, a weak cry, drooping eyelids and floppiness. If you notice any of these, seek medical help immediately.

This applies to all honey: raw or processed, local or imported, and also to honey cooked into baby foods. It also applies to traditional practices such as ghutti; many families now use a softened date for Tahnik instead. Read more in honey in Pakistan and the ghutti tradition.

When Can Children Start Eating Honey?

After their first birthday. Start with a small amount mixed into food, and watch for any reaction.

How Much Honey Is Sensible?

Honey is a sugar. Health authorities recommend limiting added sugars for children, and that includes honey. Use it as an occasional sweetener rather than a daily habit, and brush teeth afterwards, as honey is sticky.

Allergies: What to Watch For

A small number of children react to honey or pollen. Signs include rash, itching, swelling or breathing difficulty. Stop and seek medical advice if you see any of these.

Easy Ways to Add Honey to a Child’s Diet (Over 1 Year)

1. Honey Banana Smoothie (1 year+)

Blend a ripe banana, a cup of milk and ½ teaspoon of honey.

2. Honey Yoghurt with Fruit

Swirl a little honey into plain yoghurt and top with chopped fruit.

3. Honey on Toast or Paratha

A thin drizzle over buttered toast or paratha.

4. Honey Oat Porridge

Cook oats in milk and sweeten with a little honey once it has cooled.

Which Honey for Children?

Milder honeys such as Goldy Palosa and Shaftal Soul suit young taste buds best.

Honey in Pakistani Culture for Children

Honey is part of many family traditions, but modern medical advice is clear: wait until the first birthday. Honour the tradition with dates for Tahnik, and share honey with your child once they turn one.

Final Verdict

Honey is fine for children over one year, in moderation. For babies under 12 months, the answer is always no. If your child is unwell, see a doctor rather than relying on home remedies.
