Honey for Skin: Which Honey to Use and How

Relaxic Lavender honey (lavender ka shehad) jar

Honey has been part of home beauty routines in Pakistan for generations, in ubtan, in yoghurt masks and on its own. Here is a simple guide to using it, which honey to choose, and how to do it safely.

A note before we start: honey is not a skin-lightening or fairness product, and it is not a treatment for acne or any skin condition. Your natural skin tone is beautiful. If you have a skin condition, see a dermatologist.

Why Honey Works in Masks

Honey is a humectant: it draws in moisture and holds it, so skin feels soft and supple after a mask. It is also thick and sticky, which makes it a good base for holding other ingredients like yoghurt, oats or besan.

Method 1: Pure Honey Mask

Spread a thin layer of honey on clean, slightly damp skin. Leave for 10–15 minutes, then rinse with lukewarm water. Skin feels soft afterwards.

Method 2: Honey and Yoghurt Mask

Mix 1 tablespoon of honey with 1 tablespoon of plain yoghurt. Apply for 15 minutes and rinse.

Method 3: Honey Ubtan

Mix 2 tablespoons besan, a pinch of turmeric, 1 teaspoon honey and enough milk or rose water to make a paste. Apply, let it dry slightly, then rub off gently with wet fingers. Turmeric can stain, so rinse well.

Method 4: Honey and Oat Mask

Mix 1 tablespoon finely ground oats with 1 tablespoon honey and a little water. Massage gently for a soft, mild exfoliation, then rinse.

Method 5: Honey Lip Care

Dab a little honey on dry lips for a few minutes, then wipe off.

How Often?

Once or twice a week is plenty.

Do’s and Don’ts

  • Do patch test on your inner arm 24 hours before using any new mask.
  • Do rinse thoroughly.
  • Don’t use honey if you are allergic to bee products or pollen.
  • Don’t apply to broken skin, wounds, burns or active skin conditions; see a doctor.
  • Don’t use lemon on your face and then go into the sun; it can irritate skin.

FAQs

Does honey lighten skin?

No. Honey is not a skin-lightening product. It is a simple moisturising mask ingredient.

Can I leave honey on overnight?

It is sticky and can transfer to bedding; a 10–20 minute mask is more practical.

Can oily skin use honey?

Yes, many people with oily skin use simple honey masks. Patch test first.
